What is Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp micro pigmentation, or SMP for short, is the process of pigmenting the scalp to make it look like you have a real head of shaved hair. Shaved hair looks like thousands of small ‘dots’ on the scalp, and SMP aims to replicate this effect using pigments that are effectively tattooed into the skin.

How realistic is it?

SMP looks extremely realistic when applied by a skilled specialist and easy to understand how scalp micro pigmentation has become very popular, very quickly.

How does SMP work?

SMP treatments can be finished in 6-10 hours split over 3-4 separate sessions. The time required can vary depending on the style you require, the extent of your balding and the size of your head. Before treatment we have a consultation to decide on the hairline shape and position, the required density and shade for you.

Pigment dots will be layered over several sessions to gradually increase the density and darkness until the correct blend is achieved. After each session a patient is required to keep their head dry and refrain from washing or shaving it for a period of around five days. Another session will be applied after about a week, if required. Between the sessions, the pigments from the previous session will settle and the skin heals and the dots become softer, lighter and less distinct, any redness or bruising will subside.

Will it hurt?

Although not necessarily painful. The sensation is more of a pulse than a constant. Certainly the sensation is nowhere near as painful as a hair transplant procedure.
